As the year draws to a close discussion will often arises on who will be this year’s TIME magazine’s “Person of the Year.” The tradition began in 1927 when the editors of TIME named Charles Lindberg “Man of the Year” after neglecting to place his picture on the cover following his historic flight around the world. Those who have been given the title include: The American Soldier (2003), George W. Bush (2000), The Computer (1982), & “ The 25 & Under Generation” (1966.) The Criteria TIME uses is as follows: “The person or persons who most affected the news and our lives, for good or ill, and embodied what was important about the year, for better or for worse.”
Students were to write a persuasive essay on who they would choose to be “Person of the Year.” As with all persuasive essays, the purpose of the assignment was that they prove their position.
